Anthology releases July 27

Wizards has released a three-card teaser of the first 20-card Explorer Anthology, which is set to release fully on July 27th. Until that day, Wizards will be spoiling cards on a schedule not yet released.

The confirmed cards are Favored Hoplite, Supreme Verdict and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet. Of course, a boon for Heroic, UW Control, and current powerhouse Rakdos Midrange.

How much of a boon to Heroic Favored Hoplite will turn out to be depends a bit on the other cards that are printed into the format. If this comes with Monastery Swiftspear, the deck is certainly in business. Kalitas and Supreme Verdict, though, are just standalone powerful cards that will certainly give a boost to UW Control, Rakdos Midrange, Mono-Black strategies and Vampires.

If the Anthology also prints Dreadbore, Rakdos Midrange will only be missing Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in being a direct Pioneer port. UW Control is now entirely complete in Explorer as far as Pioneer versions go.

In previous announcements, Wizards has said that the Anthology would include tiered deck staples and fringe favorites, and this teaser is definitely leaning toward the former.

Stay tuned to PlayingExplorer.com for our team’s thoughts on the full anthology once all of the spoilers have been released, including a meta analysis for the release day ladder.

Pioneer got him back into Magic full-force, and the launch of Arena on mobile hooked him in forever. Now that his favorite format is working its way onto Arena, he can be found grinding the format to death. Only ever Grixis colors, but sometimes he can have a little Jund as a treat.
